A Day Trip to Stewart Island
The natural world surrounds you on Stewart Island - even in the heart of the township of Oban. Homes and gardens nestle among native vegetation. Every corner brings another vista of beach and seascape.
Bus tours cover most of the Island's 20 km of road in an hour or so. They give an excellent introduction to the Island's human and natural history. You'll see the sights and find appealing spots to visit at your leisure. Longer bus tours include bush-walks with an experienced naturalist.
Taxis and Rental Vehicles (Car, scooters, mountain-bikes) are available, to explore the outer limits of the road system. However, even the least energetic will find plenty to do on foot, all close by.
Department of Conservation have information on short walks in and near the township. Displays and videos can fill an interesting hour or two when the weather is wet. Rakiura Museum also has excellent displays of the Island's past - well worth a visit.
Scenic Boat Cruises take you to places of interest in Paterson Inlet. Ulva Island, site of the first Post Office, is a rat-free sanctuary for birdlife. Marine farming in Big Glory Bay is an important part of the Island economy. You may also stop to catch your own fish - succulent blue cod.
Kiwi Spotting is a popular night-time trip. Very few people have failed to see kiwi in the wild on this excursion. Make sure you book in advance, as trips and numbers are limited.
The natural world of Stewart Island is right at hand, and easily
accessible. However, only one percent of the Island is
settled. There's much in store for the more adventurous, who wish to
travel further afield.
